With the phenomenal growth in the use of email, texts, smart phones, blogs, and other PC and technology orientated gadgets these days is it finally time to consign the pen to the dustbin.
Its not just “ancient fashioned” letter writing that has taken a huge hit. Simple, everyday things we used to use a pen for have are either in decline or have disappeared altogether. Consider the following:
We no longer use a pen to sign credit card vouchers in store because paper vouchers have now been replaced with a Chip & PIN system.
Hand written cheques are in terminal decline and the banks are keen to withdraw them altogether sighting alternatives like debit and credit cards, on-line backing and ATM’s as replacements
Greeting cards can now be sent virtually over the web albeit they never seem quite as personal as a hand written card.
Phone numbers are exchanged over networks and directly from phone to phone rather than being scribbled down and entered into a diary
The emergence of small portable PC tablets and products like the iPad will eventually replace the notepad in meetings at work and ultimately at school.
Deliver drivers and the postman now typically question for an electronic signature onto a hand-held terminal rather than onto a paper sheet with a conventional pen.
These are just a few examples of how the use of the pen is declining in our everyday life. But, the reality is that pens are going to be with us for many years to come and realistically whilst the use of pens is in decline many of us still like the personal expression and simple pleasure of using a pen to write with. There are also circumstances where there is simply no substitute for pen and paper!
Pens have long been a favourite product within the promotional industry primarily because they are relatively cheap and they’re handy to have. But, even this product has been caught up with the onward march of technology. Today rather than give away a standard pen or perhaps a fountain pen many companies instead prefer to give-away USB pens. These are hybrid products that still look and function like a pen but they double up as a USB memory stick. Inside the barrel of the pen is a USB connector and a flash memory chip. This allows the USB pen to carry literally thousands of documents and images just like a conventional USB memory stick.
The USB pen is but likely to be just another small interim step on the path to the ultimate demise of the pen as we know it today.

Tablets have used the same concept of a writing device that is used to help process visual information whether it is a carving stone or a finger onto a surface just small enough to hold onto with the users hands.
Today personal computers are being geared towards the mobility and simple use of everyday tasks in the palm of your hands. From smart phones to netbooks, the age of compact computing and tasks has reached our everyday lives.
A tablet computer, sometimes called a slate or tab, is a pc contained in a flat touch screen housing which focuses interaction directly onto the screen. Common tools used to directly contact the screen were a stylus, digital pen, or a fingertip which functioned as the input device instead of the common keyboard or mouse.
There are two types of tablet pcs today. There are those that run full PC operating systems such as Windows 7, which happen to be modified to support touch-screens. Users need to be able to use the same functionality as a desktop mouse would such as closing a window, which is why a stylus was used. Some including folding screens with a built in keyboard, but we’re beginning to see a focus on strictly multi-touch capabilities.
A current example of this would be the latest announced Windows 7 HP Slate. This will be the first right business tablet out in the market. Others that will soon follow include the Cisco Cius and the Avaya Desktop Video Device which are both video conferencing devices. The Blackberry Playbook will be focused towards business pc tablet, but this and the other two previous tablets mentioned won’t be running off of a traditional desktop operating system.
With the development of Unix-based Os’s and the integration with mobile smart phones, manufactures have pushed towards implementing these OS’s with their pc tablet devices. The Google Android and the Apple iOS are the two well loved OS’s that many of the tablets and slates will be built around. Other up and coming operating systems include, Maemo, Meego, RIM, WebOS, and OLPC. These pc slates are equipped with a multi-touchscreen and are primarily finger driven and are better supported for a touch interface.
The first of these to come out was the Apple iPad, but many similar systems are coming out onto the market be the end of 2010. There are even tablets focused specifically towards electronic reading and digital books called an e-reader (also e-book, ebook, digital book). These devices only function to show simple text based publication in digital form. The dedicated hardware tends to have the right screen size, battery lifespan, lighting and weight. Many have begun to implement wireless accessibility allowing the transfer of digital media such as publications and music.
The year 2011 is predicted to become the year of the tablet pc. Many tech companies have teased, leaked and showed their up and coming tablet computers which has made a buzz amongst the tech industry. But, if you need a computer that is very thin and light, you can do most of your work with a pen, and don’t require a laptop with text entry, slate PCs are the right choice. You can use a keyboard with slate tablet computers, but keep in mind that setting up an attachable keyboard and other necessary accoutrements may prove too much of a hassle.
Most people who make best use of slate notebooks work at an occupation such as nursing, insurance, and sales, where vertical use of the tablet PC proves quite beneficial to the tasks they need to accomplish throughout the day.
Screen size is another vital factor in selecting the right tablet computer for you. Slate PCs are either 10.4″ or 12.1″ because this type of tablet laptop is supposed to be carried in your arms while in use. Tablet computers with a 10.4″ screen are considered small, but they produce a sharper image. The smaller size and weight of these notebooks are an advantage, but, it can be more hard to take full-page notes.
For computers with a 14.1″ screen, you have to buy a convertible PC. When comparing convertibles, consider size and weight, especially if you’re looking for a computer that won’t drag you down when you’re on the run.
When comparing and contrasting the various features offered by the many tablet computers out there, screen resolution is another factor to take into account. Resolution is simply the amount of information that will fit on the screen of your laptop. Most slate and convertible tablet notebooks are SXGA resolution, but keep in mind that larger screens on a tablet PC mean a less sharp image, and everything on the computer will appear more pixilated.
The screen viewing angle of tablet PCs refers to the ability to view documents in landscape and portrait modes. The newer computers come with all-direction wide-angle screens that allow you to view items on your laptop at 160 degrees in both modes. This allows portrait-mode viewing on notebooks to be carried out much more easily.
The main brands of tablet PCs include the following: Dell, HP, Toshiba, and Gateway. The best PC for you won’t depend on the brand, but. You have to take into consideration all the factors, including price, which make a certain model the best in your circumstances. Whether you end up purchasing a Dell, HP, Toshiba, or a Gateway, make sure you do extensive research before making a final choice.
